Island Iz is situated in northern Dalmatia, between Dugi otok and Ugljan. Island Iz has two tourist villages; Veli Iz and Mali Iz. Veli Iz and Mali Iz are beautiful little villages, surrounded by fig trees, olive gardens and vegetable plantations. Iz is the most picturesque island of the Zadar archipelago. Today's Veli Iz is a small tourist village with a hotel, a marina, a few restaurants and café’s and 300 beds in private accommodation.



Veli Iž is as if painted onto the shores of its wide bay, the high bell-tower of St Peter’s in the middle. The hundred year old dockyard and the contemporary marina are, alongside traditional carpentry, sailing and fishing, are the symbols of the town.











On the island you can find various kinds of beaches, sandy, gravel, beaches made of stones and rocks and cemented beaches. In Veli Iz are two public beach, one in front of hotel and one on small island of Rutnjak, 300 m away from port, which is a clothes-free (naturist) beach reachable from Veli Iz by a taxi-boat. Private Accommodation in Croatia

When planning your next Croatia trip you are bound to come across the term private accommodation. For our (JayWay Travel) guests in Croatia we often encourage them to stay in private accommodations. The initial reaction I often get from potential clients when I say private accommodations is generally negative. They often think that means they will be sleeping in someone’s house with their family members in the next room. While this has be known to happen this definitely is the exception rather than the rule and with enough research or suggestions from the experts such as JayWay you will be able to find the ideal Croatia private accommodation.

Private accommodations can include a number of different types of accommodations such as private rooms, apartments and villas. Terms used for private accommodations you may come across also include condos, rentals, vacation homes or holiday rentals to name a few. In Croatia private accommodations are usually the most popular and the most abundant type of accommodation.

We tend to encourage guests to stay in private accommodations as we believe they are the best value for money you will find in Croatia. There are several advantages to staying in these accommodations over hotels. For the most part we believe the hotels in Croatia are overpriced for what you get. Although they are getting better as of the last couple of years with recent reconstructions, many of the hotels in Croatia are out of date and badly in need of refurnishing. In a lot of these hotels it is like stepping back in time and not in a positive way.

However the number of hotels in Croatia are limited due to building restrictions. The Croatian Government makes it very difficult for hotels to build in new locations so many of the new hotels are built on former locations. This generally makes the process of building even longer as the former hotel has to be knocked down before building the new one. You also won’t find many chain hotels in Croatia due to these restrictions. For example the only chain in Dubrovnik is the Hilton and in Split is the Le Meridian hotel which is actually located five miles outside the center. I have always seen this as a very positive move by the government as this will allow Croatia to keep its charm instead of becoming overdeveloped like some places in southern Spain for example and ruining what was once a beautiful coastline.

The first advantage I see with private accommodations is they provide more space than a hotel. Unless you spend a lot of money on a hotel you are generally confined to a small double room, whereas for the same price you can often get a spacious one bedroom apartment allowing you for plenty of room to relax. Many of the private accommodations have kitchens which provide a nice alternative to eating out for every meal. Although I believe dining is an important part of the experience it at least allows you to have a fridge where to keep some snacks and drinks to enjoy after a day of sightseeing or a late night of partying.

Private accommodations often give more privacy than a hotel. Sometimes in hotels you can feel like you are bunched together with a number of people and it is easy to hear what is going on in the next room through the thin walls. Whereas private accommodations for example are often single locations on one floor without neighbors bothering you on either side, consist of lets say three apartments that make up one villa location or even can mean your own private location with no one in the surrounding area.

Private accommodations often have as nice and sometimes even nicer standards than hotels in Croatia. All of the private accommodations we offer to guests have a three, four or five star standard. As mentioned above the standard of some of hotels in Croatia are quite outdated so what they may call a three star or four star hotel may not live up to the standards of today. Many of these private accommodations have been restored and refurnished with modern furniture and amenities. You may find a century’s old building that has a private accommodation with a plasma TV on the wall.

Generally private accommodations have better locations than hotels. Due to the make up of some of these Croatia cities they do not allow space for big hotels so the hotels are forced to set up outside the center of town often requiring a bus or taxi to access it. One prime example of this is in Dubrovnik. In the Old Town center within the city walls there are only two small boutique hotels while there are countless private accommodations available. Many of the hotels in Dubrovnik are set outside of the center in an area known as Lapad which can only be accessed by taxi or bus. I believe if you don’t stay within walking distance of the Old Town in Dubrovnik you get a completely different experience.



Continuing on the point from above, private accommodations often have large private terraces with incredible views. Not to say hotels don’t offer this but if you are lucky you will get your small balcony with two chairs facing the sea. Whereas private accommodations allow for some of the best positioning to enjoy the most unique views these locations can offer. You can find beautiful large and private terraces where you and a group of friends can enjoy a few drinks and beautiful Croatian sunset, it does not get any better than that.

I believe private accommodations provide a more charming and authentic travel experience. The owners of these places take great pride in their accommodations and they become part of the experience. I have had the pleasure to work with a number of different owners in Croatia over the years and made a lot of good friends in the process. I often select accommodations for my guests not only on the quality of the accommodations but also based on the owners. They can bring so much to a traveling experience with their local knowledge, assistance and stories. You can really get a feel for how the people live in Croatia from these private accommodations. The feedback I receive from guests about these owners is always excellent and they often say a particular owner was what made their stay so special.

Finally, probably the biggest advantage to private accommodations is they are more a lot more affordable than hotels of the same standard. For what you get with a private accommodation if you can live without breakfast (some even have breakfast included) and some of the amenities of a hotel I believe there is really no comparison between private accommodations and hotels as the price savings is quite significant.

Despite all the advantages I listed I will say that not all the private accommodations are perfect. It can actually be quite difficult to find the quality you want out of a private accommodation. I know this first hand because it has taken years of research to compile the accommodations suitable for our clients. I have personally visited every accommodation first hand often staying in these accommodations myself. I always say I would not recommend any accommodation to a client which I would not stay in myself. When booking private accommodations on the internet be quite careful as photos and descriptions can be quite deceiving. You usually don’t know until you are actually there so that is why I believe our service is so valuable. .

All of the accommodations we offer are in the center or within walking distance of the center. I think location may be the most important factor when selecting a place to stay so to be at least in walking distance is a general criterion we use when selecting an accommodation. To illustrate this point take my Dubrovnik example from above, I could never consider a private accommodation out in Lapad. I believe the true Dubrovnik experience can only be enjoyed by staying in the Old Town or in the area just outside the city walls with its spectacular views of the Old Town and sea. Don’t get me wrong, an area like Lapad is very nice but I it does not compare to being in or around the center.

During a typical city accommodation research I may see 50 different locations and I would say in the end I may select just 10-15 I believe are suitable for our guests. Again you have to be careful as things may not always be what they appear. When I search for JayWay guest accommodations the internet is always my starting point but when seeing them first hand I was more often than not quite surprised what I found.

With private accommodation you sometimes need to proceed with caution but if you follow expert advice and research enough, private accommodations can provide you with an unforgettable travel experience.

Hotel Zvonimir in Baska (Krk) - No.1 according to Generalturist

Traveling is a difficult task. First you have to choose your destination, than how to arrive there, what to see and finally where to stay. There are so many options and possibilities. Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is to rely on recommendations of people who have been there before you.

Generalturist, a Croatian travel agency that is highly positioned on the Croatian tourist market and has been for more than 80 years, has listed on their web site the top 10 the best accommodation in their comprehensive offer based on the grades and personal experiences of guests.



The highest position No. 1, and the best ratings got Hotel Zvonimir in Baska on the island of Krk (photo above). Author of this blog could not agree more with the choice of Generalturist’s customers. This hotel is highly recommended and it is a perfect place for a beach holiday. Rooms are spacious, well furnished and equipped, the whole hotel is kept immaculately clean. Service and the restaurant are first class. Right next to the hotel there is a beautiful and spacious wellness center with indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, massage and beauty center.

Beautiful long pebbly beach is located right in front of the hotel and spreads all along Baska. It is one of the most known and beautiful beaches of Croatia, called Vela Plaza or Great Beach. It can be quite busy during peak of the season, but if you prefer more secluded beaches, you don’t need to worry because there are plenty of them in Baska’s surroundings. There are taxi boats taking you there or if you prefer some recreation you can walk. Baska is also known as a great place for hiking as there are about 30 miles of marked hiking paths. It is also a good place for windsurfing because of favorable winds.

Baska is a nice charming place (direct link to Google map) with many café bars, restaurants and little shops. It can be a good place as a base to explore the island of Krk which is connected with the mainland by a spectacular bridge. Visiting the town of Krk and the town of Vrbnik are highly recommended.

How to reach Krk island?

And the best of all, although Krk is an island, it can be reached very easily. If you travel by car, you don't need a ferry because the island is connected to the mainland by a spectacular 1.534 m long bridge.
If you travel by plane it is good to know that Rijeka's International Airport is situated on the island of Krk (www.rijeka-airport.hr, www.dohop.com – flight planner).
Krk is also easy reachable by a bus. There are plenty of buses from Rijeka which stop in all the towns from Omisalj in the north to Baska in the south (www.autotrans.hr). Krk can be also reached by a bus from Zagreb (www.akz.hr) either directly or via Rijeka. If you travel from Italy, there are regular bus lines between Rijeka and Trieste.
Rijeka has also good train connections with Zagreb (www.hznet.hr).

The main ferry line serving Krk Island is the ferry from Valbiska to Lopar on Rab Island but it only runs from June to September. Hostels in Zagreb

Until recently there was a problem finding cheap accommodation in Zagreb, especially good hostels where young people on budget can stay. Luckily this has changed and now there is a boom of pretty little cosy hostels that offer more than just a clean bed.

Zagreb daily newspaper Večernji List had a recently an interesting article about Zagreb hostels, so here are the most interesting parts.

Big or small, with lots or just a few bedrooms, no matter how many bathrooms they have, located in the city or in suburbs, majority of Zagreb hostels have what is the most important: they are cosy, clean, have a positive and cheerful atmosphere, imaginative interior design and a young and friendly stuff. We have checked: stuff is ready to help in every moment and they are very good in English.


Fulir hostel in Zagreb

One of hostels that has all these qualities is “Fulir” (http://www.fulir-hostel.com/), (map, contact) located centrally in the passage of Radićeva street. A view to their homely and charming Zagreb backyard, fun sign with hostel’s name, spiral stairs leading to the reception, all awake good feelings. Behind the colorful reception sits a nice girl and there is a graffiti decorated living room with TV, computer, sofas, chairs, scattered pillows and book shelves.

On one of sofas lies half-conscious young guy from Britain who, still at 5 PM, is recovering from the night before. Next to him, in a chair, sits 25 yo American Jory Gravelyn, a law student from New York University, reading carefully Eastern European Guide.

“I am attracted to history of Balkans and south-east Europe. Interesting, but people are so friendly. I ask for a direction and they almost always take me personally to my destination” – she says cheerfully.

The living room is a favorite room to meet people from all over the world.

“Majority of young people travels alone and hostel is a perfect place to meet somebody along the way. Many make friends fast and they go out together to explore the city” – says a shy receptionist, offering a free Ožujsko beer to the Japanese guests asking about local beers.

Fulir was opened just two years ago. It has only tree bedrooms and one bathroom, but the last year British hostel agency Worldhostels included it among 10 the most pleasant hostels in the world.


Carpe Diem hostel in Zagreb

When it comes to atmosphere, Carpe Diem hostel (http://www.hostel.com.hr/) (map, contact) (about 10 minutes by tram from the centre) is right there with Fulir. This hostel is situated in a family house in Šalata part of the city and has one great advantage: peaceful neighborhood, no noise and in the back there is a large backyard and a terrace.

“I feel better than home! A wife and kids are bugging me there, and here I am enjoying myself with guys! I would rather stay here for few more days” – cheerfully says a Macedonian who spent 5 days in Carpe Diem. “The other night I played cards with an American and Albanian guy and a Serb girl. I felt like in the middle of some joke. Where else you can experience that?” – he says.

Carpe Diem has 3 bedrooms and total of 16 beds and a kitchen. In the basement there is a living room with TV and furniture that is begging to be lied on.

“During a winter, guests like to gather here. Some of them don’t even go out a whole day but rather stay here and fool around with us” – tells us a 28 yo Domagoj, one of the owners.

Newly renovated Omladinski Hostel (http://www.hfhs.hr/) in Petrinjska street (map, contact) (near the main railway station and the centre) is the only hostel in Zagreb that is a member of International Youth Hostel Federation, proudly says Ivica Nikolac, the manager. It has 55 rooms with totally 210 beds and it has over 30.000 guests during a year.

We met there two guys from Holland, a 22 yo media communication student Jelletie Roats and a 25 yo Lennart Bruger. “I though Zagreb was smaller and much poorer. But everybody looks so rich here. People are friendly, open and talkative” – he shares with us his first impressions. Two friends are staying in Zagreb for 2 days and then plan to visit some small and peaceful place on the coast.

It seems that young westerners are especially attracted to the interesting history of south-east Europe and less commercialism than in western countries.

“Everybody is traveling to Greece, Spain or Italy. Croatia is exotic because of a mixture of Mediterranean and Slavic culture” – young American Andrew Brands from Colorado explains us in small hostel Nocturno (http://www.nokturno.hr/) in Skalinska street in the very centre of the city. He especially likes the way that Croats dress. “We Americans are always a little bit behind of you Europeans when it comes to fashion. People here dress with style” – says his friend Joey Murray.


Ravnice hostel in Zagreb

It takes only one look at hostel Ravnice (http://www.ravnice-youth-hostel.hr/) (map, contact) (about 30 minutes by tram from the centre) to see that it was designed by a professional. Owner and manager of this 8 years old hostel is an architect Vera Pesjak. For guests she has designed a big family house.

Beside a huge backyard with table and chairs there is also a winter terrace, all in glass, with tables and brown comfortable wicker chairs. The idea to open a hostel she got from reading Lonely Planet tourist guide where she found an information that Zagreb lacks of hostels. Then she decided to transform a house she just bought into a hostel.


Buzz Backpackers hostel in Zagreb

Hostel Buzz Backpackers (http://www.buzzbackpackers.com/) (map, contact) in Babukićeva Street near Maksimirska street (about 15 minutes by tram from the centre) was opened this year by an American, a Japanese and a Croat. Like Carpe Diem this one is also part of a family house. At the reception desk you can buy football shirts of Croatian team and condoms costing only 3 Kuna!

Cheerful 22 yo Brit Wesley Evans was sitting in the living room accompanied by a friend Anthony Midgley. He decided to visit Zagreb because he wanted to escape far from home and a flight ticket to Croatia was cheap.


Lika hostel in Zagreb

Two years ago hostel Lika (http://www.hostel-lika.com/) (map, contact) in Pašmanska street near the main bus station was opened. Owners, young married couple Marko and Ilona, often prepares barbecue for their guests.

Tourist Flower - Quality for Croatia 2007

Croatian Television and the Croatian Chamber of Economy are organizing each year „Tourist Flower – Quality for Croatia“ action which evaluates the quality of Croatian tourist destinations.
In 2007 „Tourist Flower“ was held for the 11th time and the final event was held in the town of Bol on the island of Brač on the 25th of September 2007.

Overall winner for 2007

Among other 100 nominated tourist resorts all over Croatia the main award, Croatian Champion of Tourism, was given to the town of Hvar on the island of Hvar. Judges were assessing tourist offer, tidiness and hospitality.
