Ryanair introduced flights from Osijek to Frankfurt

The largest European low-cost company Ryanair has finally decided to include Airport Osijek in its timetable. Starting May 6 2009, two times a week a new air line will connect the biggest town in eastern Croatia with Frankfurt in Germany.

Return flights from Osijek Klisa Airport to Frankfurt Hahn Airport (Boeing 737-800 planes with capacity of 186 and 189 passengers) will be on Wednesdays and on Sundays. Return flight cost, including all taxes, will be 53.67 EUR.

Although Osijek Airport officials hoped that Ryanair will also introduce flights to London, unfortunately that didn’t happen.

In the same time, Germanwings flights from Osijek to Germany have been discontinued for this season. During the summer season, Croatia Airlines will reintroduce flights from Osijek to Split and Zagreb.

Osijek Klisa Airport

Osijek Klisa Airport is settled 20km away from Osijek by the Osijek-Vukovar regional road. There is a shuttle bus leaving 1,5 hour before all flights in front of Urania cinema in downtown Osijek. The bus will take you straight to the airport and the ticket price is 20 Kuna.

Osijek - Ante Starcevica main square

Osijek is well-connected with regular bus routes running to most Croatian cities and also has daily service to Bosnia, Serbia and Germany. Buses also run to Switzerland three times per week.

The Croatia railway network has regular trains from Osijek to Zagreb six times per day and one to Rijeka. From Zagreb, there are connections to Slovenia, Austria, Germany and Switzerland . The trip to Zagreb takes a mere three hours if you're travelling with modern tilting trains, but up to five hours with other trains. Other international destinations served from Osijek are Sarajevo and Budapest.

If you’re travelling by car, Osijek is connected with Zagreb by a modern 4-lane motorway and it takes about 2,5 hours to reach it.

News form Osijek : a new hostel and low cost carriers

With the increasing popularity of eastern Croatia, especially Baranja, city of Osijek, towns of Đakovo, Vukovar and other places in the area of Eastern Slavonia, more good news are coming from there.

New airways connections

In addition to the low cost airline Germanwings, which successfully operated a line between Osijek and Köln ( Cologne ) and which will continue to do so after the winter, RyanAir will probably start to fly directly from Osijek to London Stansted 2 times a week from April 2009. Osijek Airport and Ryan Air are negotiation also some other destination, like Frankfurt and Stuttgart in Germany.

Osijek Airport officials say they are also in the middle of negotiations between some other low cost carriers who are supposed to connect Osijek with Switzerland and Scandinavia.

New cheap accommodation facilities

In addition to a good hotel selection, Osijek will get its first hostel. The grand opening is planned for 17 October 2008 and the hostel will be located above popular Tufna nightclub situated in the historic baroque part of the town - Tvrdja, Kuhaceva Street 10 (phone +385 31 215 020, mobile: +385 98 339 965 or +385 91 3399 665). There will be altogether 20 beds in 3 or 4 bedrooms, a living room with satellite TV and wireless Internet, bathroom and toilets, dining room and a “self service” kitchen. Price per night – 100Kuna, that’s about 15 Euro per night including free internet & towels. Surprisingly, Osijek is going to be only a second town in continental Croatia, after Zagreb, which will get a hostel.

Tvrdja (“Citadel”) is an eighteenth-century complex of cobbled streets, grandiose buildings and open squares, surrounded by parks and Drava river, and it represents the best-preserved ensemble of Baroque buildings anywhere in Croatia. Originally planned and used as a military settlement, Tvrdja is today Osijek’s education centre accompanied by some of Osijek’s the most popular bars, pubs and clubs.
